Office Description
Note: Diocesan Convention nominates candidates for the Board of Trustees of the Cathedral to elect
Term: Three years
The Cathedral is an autonomous institution. It is part of—yet apart from—the Diocese. The Bishop is president of the Board of Trustees, which governs the Cathedral. The Dean, the President of Columbia University, and heads of certain Cathedral and Diocesan organizations and committees are ex officio members. In addition, there are 16 clerical and 44 lay members. Each year Diocesan Convention nominates 3 clergy and 7 lay trustees. Note that Diocesan Convention does not elect Trustees—it nominates them. The actual election of the persons nominated by Convention takes place at the December Annual Meeting of the Board. The Board meets four times a year. However, much work is done in the several Cathedral Trustee committees, coordinated by the Executive Committee, which meets in the months when the Board does not meet.
A Trustee of the Cathedral: holds the Cathedral in trust; supports the Cathedral financially, materially and spiritually; is knowledgeable about the Cathedral’s mission, constitution and vision; communicates concerns of the Diocese, city, state, nation and the Church as a whole to those attending the Cathedral and vice versa; is elected or appointed so that he/she can bring wisdom, sensitivity, conscience, perception, discernment, and helpful skills to the fulfillment of the Cathedral’s mission.
